Frank
out in the yard with the lid hammered and a mock up wing I was
trying on for size.
The plan for the design on the car will follow the late sixties early seventies style gasser and the street cars of the time. During this time the rage was to put a straight axle (click here for example) under the front end of the car and this is the type of suspension we will be using on the Vega.
The front end arrived on 6/22/00. Initial mock up.
Out in the yard after we removed the front stock sheet metal and added new front frame and steering.

Here are a few shots of the rear end housing in the car mocked up and ready to start mounting.
.
I want to build my own axle using the Chevy Van spindles shown here. The axle itself is too wide and heavy to be used. The new axle will use a 2"X.120 wall 4130 tube and I will make new king pin bosses and build my own brakes with Wilwood parts.
The car was a '77 Vega (Vegas are getting hard to find). The plan is for an extended fiberglass front end..
Chassis back half will be fabricated first using 2"X3"X.083 (see above) wall mild steel tube, with the front half of the chassis using 2"X3"X.120 wall tube to hang the tube axle on.
This shot is the back of the car gutted and ready to start. These next two pics are of the rear chassis section built up and installed in the car.
The next step is to trim out the rest of the sheet metal around the wheel wells that will be discarded and attach the rear end to the chassis.
This is a pic of the drivers bay.Kind of run down but that's going change.
It's a real hack job but it actually ran like this (Oh my God!) but was never on the street. This was a shade tree special. The engine was a 400 Poncho out of a '79 Trans Am. I wanted to use it,but parts for this old dog are hard to find so I had Mike Saye of Carolina Machine Engines build us a "Premium Fuel Only" 350 small block, which we want to use with a 4 speed.
I found a Littlefield 6:71 blower and an antique hilborn mailbox 4 hole injector. However, with this Carolina Machine Engines 350 I will hopefully start out with a tunnel ram.
I want to run it mechanical but may have BDS make it into a new electronic set up for ease of operation and driveablity.
